The First Green Olympics Greenpeace, the international environmental organization, launched a campaign known as ''The Green Olympic Games: Sydney 2000.'' In 1992, it proposed turning the Olympics held in Australia into a global showplace of solutions to environmental problems. The ideas that sustain the campaign are as simple as they are irrefutable, for example, that world caliber athletes depend on clean air and water to compete at their maximum capacity. To find out more about the Greenpeace campaign, connect yourself to www. greenpeace.org. Also at that website, the Greenpeace Chile section holds the details to its ''Zero Pollution'' campaign, involving fight in that country for effective laws to halt the contamination of rivers, oceans and the air. And the section for Argentina invites its citizens to send in an outline of their hands, which will be presented to the country's lawmakers as a popular demand for a law that forces a reduction in the use and emission of substances that pollute the environment. The Vast World of Beetles Some species of beetles, coleopteran insects that are often used to portray things that are mysterious, deformed or devious, were given names in Mexico derived from the native Nahuatl language, such as 'mayates,' 'chimayates,' 'pipioles,' 'temoles' and 'jicotes.' To learn more about the beetles that inhabit this Latin American nation, we recommend a visit to: www.conabio.gob.mex/biodiversitas/libro12.htm. At this website, the government's National Commission for Biodiversity presents Volume I of its atlas on beetles. The collection, titled ''Beetles in Mexico,'' synthesizes the inventory and geographical distribution of the insect in Mexican territory. In addition, for further data about the famous 'mariquitas,' or ladybugs, the University of Arizona offers the website www.insected.arizona.edu There, the Center for Insect Science Education Outreach explains how birds try to eat adult ladybugs but their foul taste makes them unpalatable.
